The Legend of St. George

According to crusader legend, a dragon made his nest near a city in Libya and guarded its essential spring. To appease the dragon and regain access to the water supply, the people of the city drew lots each day to choose a human sacrifice. Eventually, the princess was chosen. Her father, the king, begged for her life, but the people refused.

As the story goes, St. George passed by the town on the same day and learned of the tragic situation. He rode to the dragon’s nest, moved the princess out of danger, made the sign of the cross and distracted the dragon with his lance. After wounding it with his sword, he bound the dragon and led it into the city center.

In front of the townspeople, St. George declared, “Behold the power of God!” and slew the dragon. Moved by his courage, the town converted to Christianity.

First told in the 5th century A.D., the legend used the dragon as a symbol of paganism defeated by Christianity, or good triumphing over evil. St. George became a symbol of courage, devotion, piety, leadership, truthfulness and dedication among the Crusaders.
