The Oberammergau Passion Play - Oberammergau Passionsspiele -
The small Bavarian town of Oberammergau is well-known for its passion play, which brings to life the story of Jesus Christ’s trial, death and resurrection. When the bubonic plague hit the town in the 1600s, the villagers vowed that they would perform a passion play every 10 years if God spared their lives. The first performance was in 1634. The play is now performed repeatedly over the course of five months in years ending in zero. Over 200 actors, singers, instrumentalists and technicians, all of whom are village residents, are involved with the show.

UPDATE: The 2020 Oberammergau Passion Play has been postponed until 2022
"In 1633 the Oberammergau villagers promised to perform the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ every tenth year, in so far as no one was to die of the plague anymore. The villagers were answered by God and therefore in 1634 the first Passion Play took place. The promise has been kept until today. 2020 the Passion Play had to be postponed for two years due to the corona-pandemic. The 42nd Oberammergau Passion Play will now take place from 14 May to 2 October 2022."
