Additional information on the embossed motif on the pewter lid
The pewter lid on this Official Munich Oktoberfest Stein portrays the popular folk singer Bally Prell (real name Agnes Pauline Prell), born in 1922 in the Leopold-Street of Munich. The "beauty queen of Schneizlreuth" was known for her voluminous deep voice and shape.
On October 31, 1953, she performed for the first time in Munich's Platzl with her song "Die Schönheitskönigin von Schneizlreuth" ("The beauty queen of Schneizlreuth"), caricaturing the emerging beauty craze. She remained deeply bonded to the Munich Platzl until the end of her life.
Bally Prell is buried in Munich's North Cemetery (grave no. 2-3-5).
The History & Traditions of Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest originated in 1810 as a celebration of Crown Prince Ludwig's marriage to Princess Therese in Munich. The initial celebration featured horse races and public festivities on the Theresienwiese grounds. Over time, it evolved into the world's largest beer festival (Volksfest), incorporating iconic traditions such as the mayor's ceremonial tapping of the first beer keg, colorful parades, and elaborate beer tents.
Today, Oktoberfest is one of the largest festivals in the world and celebrates Bavarian culture with authentic beer steins and mugs, oompah bands, and traditional outfits, while strictly serving beer from Munich's six historic breweries. This 16-18 day festival continues to draw millions of visitors annually, preserving its rich heritage while embracing modern celebrations.
