Traditional Christmas Pyramids from Germany

Remember the scene in Christmas Vacation when Cousin Eddie knocks all the fins off the spinning decoration on the table? It's a classic movie moment and the first introduction many people had to traditional German Christmas pyramids. With roots in Germany's Ore Mountains, these delightful spinning Christmas decorations continue to charm adults and children alike.

How Do German Christmas Pyramids Work?

Powered solely by candles, German Christmas pyramids are easy to set up and enjoy. Don't worry, Chevy Chase played up the fins falling off for comedy. Your Christmas pyramid will bring plenty of smiles without the slapstick assembly!

Christmas pyramids have long been used to decorate German homes during the holiday season. Originating in the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge), these decorations feature rotating tiers with traditional Christmas motifs like nativity scenes, angels and other festive figures.

Pyramids are generally made of wood and feature four- to eight-sided platforms with a central axle. Heat from burning candles rises toward the angled blades, causing the tiers to slowly rotate.

How to Make a German Christmas Pyramid Spin

Some people have a little trouble getting their Christmas pyramids to spin properly. First, check whether the pyramid can spin freely. Give it a slight push and see if it stops rapidly. If it does, it may be out of alignment. Try adjusting the spinning disc until it falls into place and spins smoothly.

If your pyramid spins easily when pushed, the problem may be with the blade angles. Make sure the blades aren't flat or vertical. They should be inserted at approximately a 30° angle to the base. If the blades are properly angled, check whether the pyramid is flat and level. Keep it away from drafts, as moving air can disrupt the rising heat needed to turn the blades.

Lastly, be patient. It takes a few moments for the candles to generate enough heat to get the pyramid spinning.

Try giving it a gentle push to help it start. Once running, the candles alone should keep it moving. For a faster spin, try angling the blades closer to 45°, but avoid going beyond 45°.
