Peter Duemler Collection

Peter Duemler is one of the best-known artists in the history of Westerwald stein making. Born in 1860, Peter was a potter in Höhr-Grenzhausen, Germany, an area well-known for its rich clay deposits.  Peter, along with his childhood friend and brother-in-law, Albert Breiden, received his training from Albert’s uncle, Simon Peter Gerz. Peter also trained with Reinhold Hanke , another prominent stoneware stein producer.  Peter and Albert launched their own business, Duemler & Breiden, in 1883, initially producing crockery and then moving on to producing beer steins. Peter is considered by many to be the finest stoneware stein modeler (artist) of all time. Many of his designs are still being used for present day beer stein manufacturing.
